It is when someone with type 1 diabetes restricts their insulin to lose weight. But people with the chronic condition need insulin to live – and going without can lead to blindness, amputations and death.
Recent studies suggest a third of young people with type 1 diabetes in New Zealand avoid insulin in some way.
But as Louise Ternouth reports – experts here are hoping to use technology and education to help.
